Below is a selection of paintings from the Neon Series which Jelaine created between 2012 and 2016.
A visit to the Neon Museum in Las Vegas in 2012 elicited a trove of photographs of as-yet-to-be-cleaned-and-polished Old Vegas signage that, 35 years before, had been on display on The Strip and Downtown. Having been a child when these signs were in their full glory in the 1970's and 1980's, a nostalgic desire to capture them in painted form took root. Abandoned and weathered over the decades, they appeared distinctly separated from their original function, and the choice to capture dissected portions of them was intentional, giving them new life and new meaning all their own.
