Below is a small selection of paintings Jelaine has completed between 2013 and the present in a style she describes as Illustrative Realism. It is a blend of two artistic styles, combined to tell humorous stories that usually poke fun at human foibles.
The combination of styles came out of a lifelong fascination with ad art, particularly American and European ad art of the 1900's through 1930's. The Art Nouveau and Art Deco Periods birthed a wealth of illustrative design that could often border on Realism with some of its rich details. Alphonse Mucha's theatrical posters come to mind.
While the work below does not directly resemble those periods, there is still a slight homage paid to the past through the vintage objects chosen as subject matter in many of Jelaine's pieces. A more literal interpretation of what it means to combine Illustration with Realism is the approach for this particular body of work.
