ARTIST'S STATEMENT
I don't have a favorite subject. Anything and everything appeals to me. My choice of painting subject is usually dictated by the rhythm, shape, color, light and shadow I see in it which pulls a meditative, subconscious response from me before I have a chance to think about it.
My travel series and architectural series are each from photographs I've taken in brief moments of glancing at something that moved me. I think about it and discover what attracted me to it later when I paint it. It reveals itself to me then, and it's such a rush, like a room full of presents on Christmas morning.
This also applies to the still life "Color Therapy" pieces and most of the "Small Works". While there is some intent in what I choose to photograph and paint, it is usually just random gatherings of objects that appeal to me, followed by hurried and unstudied photographs which I then crop and print for painting. It is those moments at the computer where I find something in the images that stirs the subconscious response, a flood of emotions that send tingles up my spine. Then I try to recreate that response on canvas so that hopefully the viewer also feels it before they think it, and also experiences some of the thrill that it gives me to paint it.
